Raga Gauri - Beauty from Guru Granth Sahib (Aroh, Avaroh, Pakad and Shabad)

Introduction
Raga Gauri is an India musical raga that appears in the Sikh tradition from northern India and is part of the Sikh holy scripture called Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS.)

Every raga has a strict set of rules which govern the number of notes that can be used; which notes can be used; and their interplay that has to be adhered to for the composition of a tune.

In the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy Granth (book) there are a total of 31 raga compositions and this raga is the third raga to appear in the series.

Gauri is one of several ragas that appears in the Ragmala as a ragini (subset) of Sri Raga. This is an evening raga assigned to autumn and its mood is contemplative.

The composition in Gauri is very voluminous. Gauri was used by Guru Nanak, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Several forms of Gauri Raga exist historically and this probably accounts for the large number of variants: Gauri Cheti, Gauri Bairagan, Gauri Dipaki, Gauri Purbi-Dipaki, Gauri Guareri, Gauri-Majh, Gauri Malava, Gauri Mala, Gauri Sorath, Gauri Dakhani.

Raga Malkauns (Malkosh) or Hindolam - Learn to sing with notes Aroh, Avaroh, Rasa

Introduction

Raga Malkauns (a.k.a Malkosh) is a very popular raga in the North Indian System (Hindustani Classical Music). In the South it is known as Hindolam. It is a pentatonic raga that has five notes Sa, Ga(k), Ma, Dha(k), and Nn(k). One would think that with so many komal (flat) notes, it would have a strong minor quality about it. However, upon close examination we see that the absence of the fifth and the strong presence of the fourth causes the mind to "invert" it. Therefore, it tends to sound surprisingly similar to Dhani to which it has a murchana relationship.

Raga Pahadi - Learning Notes, Aroh, Avaroh and Bollywood Songs

Introduction

Raga Pahadi is a popular raga based on folk music. As its name suggests, it originates from the mountainous region of Himalayas. It resembles two other ragas which exude the rich cultural heritage of folk music: Mand from the Rajasthan region and Pilu from the Hindi heartland. It is a light raga and resembles more like a 'dhun'. It is very popular in Hindi music and sometimes simulates multiple echoes.

Pahadi is mostly sung in the lower and middle octaves. Soundofindia.com describes it beautifully: the raga is like a lover, unruffled in union, serene in separation, powerful enough to achieve eternal union, but resigned to the painful parting ordained by destiny.

Which wind instruments are used in Indian Classical Music: History, Origin and Facts

Shehnai

Considered to be an auspicious instrument, shehnai belongs to the category of Aerophonic Instruments. It is said to be of Persian origin and is a one reed instrument with six holes yielding soft and melodious sound.

Made of a smooth dark-grained black wood, the tube is narrower on the top and widens towards the bottom affixed in a cup. All the tunes of full tone, half tone and sharp notes can be played on this instrument through breath control. The notes are continuous and is generally and is generally used in classical and light classical music.

Flute

This wind instrument of ancient India was very common with Lord Krishna and religious music of the Buddhists. Even the frescoes of Ajanta and Ellora depict this flute or Bansuri as an accompaniment to vocal and instrumental music.
Being an instrument of great antiquity, it’s construction has remained constant over the years.
It is made of a cylindrical bamboo pipe of uniform bore, containing six holes for movement of fingers and bigger holes for blowing air. It is handled in an oblique position and air blown with the upper lip into the many holes. Different octaves are produced by covering the holes with the fingers.

Nagaswaram

It is believed that this representative of the south Indian Music evolved from the snake charmer’s Pungi Nagaswaram was well known in the 15th and 16th centuries and formed an integral part of the temples. It consists of a wooden mouthpiece into which the player blows the air.

This air under pressure is released from the lower end of the gourd through two bamboo or metal pipes.

These tubes have a valve each to control air flow through the pipes and have holes to control the melody. Nagaswaram often attains a wild beauty and softness and brings out the subtle graces of Carnatic music.
